Chapter Six
Tatum walked into Los Héroes more than ready to start his new job and life. A call to Garrett had confirmed his stuff had arrived and was stacked in his bedroom. Now all he had to do was find a certain computer expert and see if he could get past his prickly exterior. In actuality, Tatum didn’t care how mouthy Morgan became. He liked the man just the way he was.
After a short rap on Roman’s office door, he walked into the room. Roman sat behind his desk, typing on a laptop computer.
“Hello, Tatum.” The big man closed the computer. “I hope the move to Los Héroes went smoothly.”
“Yep, I just arrived,” Tatum answered and sat in a chair across from Roman. “Now all I have to do is unpack.”
“Take the day to adjust.” Roman steepled his fingertips. “Every morning, after breakfast, the team meets in here to go over the daily schedule. I’ll expect you to join us tomorrow. The only other item you should be aware of at this time is that Garrett’s meal schedule is written in stone. He is the only one who can make any changes. Just remember seven, noon, and six. Never, no matter what, show up late.”
“Okay. I’ll keep that in mind.” Tatum had no plans to rock the boat.
The office door burst open. Roman’s husband rushed in and stood with his hands on his hips.
“Roman, he’s in the pool again,” Jimmy announced. “He’s going to hurt himself or drown. Tristen says he’s been swimming laps nonstop for the last hour.”
Roman’s jaw hardened. “He’s working through things. Give him time.”
Tatum wondered whom they were talking about.
“No,” Jimmy objected. “He needs to quit running through the backcountry until he collapses, and swimming until he doesn’t have the energy to pull himself out of the pool. He’s going to injure something and be out of commission when a rescue call comes in. The last couple of days he’s barely talked to anyone, and when he does say something, pure venom comes out of his mouth.” Jimmy leaned forward, rested his hands on the desk, and peered at Roman. “Do something. You know the guys are ready to step in and make him talk about what’s bothering him. Nothing about that will be pretty.”
Whoever was having problems, Tatum thought he sounded as if he was messed up pretty bad.
“I was waiting for Morgan to say something, but tonight at dinner, I’ve decided to make the announcement that Morgan lost Kevin.”
Kevin? Who the hell is Kevin?
Jimmy’s mouth dropped open for a moment, before he regained his composure. “What are you talking about? That’s insane. Where did he go?”
Tatum couldn’t hold back a second longer. “Who’s Kevin?”
“Kevin is a little boy we found during a rescue,” Roman answered. “He had been kidnapped and sold to a pedophile. Something clicked between Morgan and Kevin. Morgan became licensed as a foster parent and was supposed to bring Kevin here to Los Héroes last weekend, but we were called out on a rescue.
